Fujifilm Finepix 2800

The Fujifilm Finepix 2800 is an excellent buy, combining 2 megapixel resolution with 6x optical zoom (38mm- 228mm). The 2800 also includes a video mode that allows the shooting of 320 x 240 pixel movies with sound up to 60 seconds long. This combined with easy to use controls and simple USB picture transfer make this one of the best digital cameras in its price range.

The Finepix 2800 comes equipped with an electronic viewfinder (EVF), which allows exact framing of pictures without using as much battery power as the LCD screen. It also gives a better preview of lighting and depth-of-field than a traditional optical viewfinder. The EVF, however, is not without problems. It is almost impossible to see through in low-light conditions and has no diopter correction for people wearing glasses.

The two megapixel resolution is good for prints up to 8 x 10 inches when pictures are taken on maximum resolution. The Finepix 2800 offers six resolution modes, but picture quality suffers on lower settings. The 6x optical zoom is an excellent feature, but pictures can be blurry when shot handheld, especially in low light conditions. 2.5x digital zoom is also offered on the lowest resolution, for a total of 15x zoom.

The controls on the Finepix 2800 are simple to navigate and the automatic settings provide point-and-shoot ease of use. Manual controls can provide greater control over white balance and brightness, but professional photographers will miss the ability to control exposure and aperture. The macro mode allows for close up shots, but the auto focus often has trouble focusing on small objects.

The Finepix 2800 is a great buy for amateur and intermediate photographers, but it lacks the ability to fine-tune shots. Controls are easy to use, and picture quality is good, although for large prints third-party software should be used to improve resolution. Also, a set of rechargeable batteries AA batteries is desirable to replace the 4 included disposable batteries, because the EVF, LCD screen, and flash are power-hungry.
