Sony DCR-PC330 MiniDV Handycam Camcorder

For those looking for a camcorder recording quality video and capturing good stills (taking into account maybe inevitable compromise) the Sony DCR-PC330 can be ideal choice. DCR-PC330 replaces DCR-PC120BT (1.5-megapixel CCD) and features 1/3″ 3 Mega-Pixel CCD with 2,048k effective video pixels and with indeed impressive for camcorders 3,040k effective still pixels.

Contrary to DCR-PC120BT, the Sony DCR-PC330 lacks Bluetooth technology which didn’t prove to be very functional.

Along with a 2.5-inch hybrid touch panel liquid crystal display (LCD) for an easy-access, easy-to-see menu, the new 3-D user menu is customizable into a Personal Menu. Once users assemble their favorite features into their own Personal Menu, it takes just one touch on the LCD to facilitate a personal shooting style.

The new three-colour filter uses proprietary technology that quadruples the area for each primary colour, resulting in more true-to-life photographs and video. Like the human eye distinguishes colour through red, green and blue photoreceptors, the new primary colour filter uses the same colours to deliver vibrant and colour-rich video and still images.

The Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T Lens on the DCR-PC330 features a 10x Variable Optical Zoom and advanced multi layer coating system normally found on professional SLR (single lens reflex) cameras. This coating reduces reflections in the lens for a more faithful and accurate image. Sony DCR-PC330 can also take full advantage of a 120x precision Digital Zoom and a precision colour viewfinder.

Beyond Sony’s standard advanced features such as Super NightShot infrared system for shooting video in total darkness and the Super SteadyShot system for image stabilization, this new model also has a new smooth interval record feature, enabling smooth time-lapse recording. Various recording intervals and recording time can be specified to suit the type of situation being recorded.

Manual controls include focus (Ring), exposure (Touch Panel – 24 Steps), white balance (Touch Panel – Indoor, Outdoor, Hold), shutter speed 1/4-1/4000 (Program AE Mode).

Digital still photos are captured as JPEG files directly to Memory Stick(R) or Memory Stick PRO(TM) flash media. To boost convenience, users can capture up to 890 photos at maximum resolution (2016 x 1512 pixels) with a 1 gigabyte (GB) Memory Stick PRO card. A 16MB Memory Stick media card is supplied.

Users may also shoot video in the MPEG Movie EX format, which captures MPEG1 video clips with audio onto Memory Stick or Memory Stick PRO media up to the length of the media capacity. Video can also be shot to the MiniDV tape and converted in-camera to the MPEG movie format later. MPEG Movie EX makes it easy to send video as an e-mail attachment or insert video clips into web pages and presentation materials.

Connectivity is well served with the provision of a USB interface in addition to Sony i.LINK and DV-In/Out. The new model is PictBridge compliant, which allows direct printing without a PC from the camcorder via USB to a PictBridge compatible printer. The DCR-PC330 also offers the Click-to-DVD facility for simple direct DVD authoring when connecting with Sony VAIO via i.LINK.

Conclusion

Taking into account relatively low price, Sony DCR-PC330 is highly recommended camcorder, recording great video and print-quality still photos.
