Sony DCR-TRV27 MiniDV Camcorder

Better than the TRV17 and TRV18, and worse than TRV50. The camcorder has a 1 Mega Pixel 1/4.7 in. Advanced HADâ„¢ CCD. The CCD is rated to use 690K pixels for video and 1000K pixels for stills. The TRV27 has a better still picture quality rating and the same 530 line resolution (vs. 500 for TRV17) that the 30 series has.

The Advanced HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) enhanced CCD design allows more light to reach the imager which has the end result of improving the signal to noise ratio by up to 6dB (2x better than a standard CCD imager). However this imaging system is not very effective in low light situations, as one can expect. Picture quality in such situations is rather poor.

The DCR-TRV27 has a 10X optical and a 120X digital zoom and 3.5 in. LCD screen with 123K pixels. SwivelScreen display rotates up to 270 degrees providing detailed images for monitoring or playback that you can see from multiple viewing angles. For a closer look at image details, use the playback zoom in on your images during playback

Great manual control. You can adjust the autofocus using the focus ring and the exposure using the dial. Also you can manually adjust the white balance and shutter speed. The buttons are placed comfortably, easy to reach. This camera also delivers quick and reliable autofocus, even in low light.

Using Digital Still Memory mode, you can capture quality megapixel still images at 1152 x 864 resolution, or at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels for e-mailing or posting to the web. Unlike TRV50 this camcorder does not have a pop-up flash for taking your digital stills. The DCR-TRV27 comes with one 8 MB Memory Stick. Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take a lot of digital images, then you’ll want a bigger card.

USB interface provides an easy way to connect your camcorder to any USB enabled computer for transfer of digital images and MPEG movies stored on Memory Stick media. Besides transferring images from your Memory Sticks, you can use the USB interface contact others on the Internet. USB streaming allows you to broadcast live video with audio, or playback recorded scenes stored on tape. Its like having a web camera.

One of the upgraded features is the addition of MPEG Movie EX Mode. This allows you to record uninterrupted to the full capacity of the Memory Stick you are recording on. For example, the 128MB Memory Stick media will record up to 85 minutes of nonstop MPEG videos that are perfect for e-mailing or streaming over the Internet.

Analog NTSC video can be passed through your Digital Handycam camcorder directly into your computer (with compatible software) via the i.LINK (IEEE 1394) interface in real time for easy computer editing of your analog footage. So, besides providing high-speed transfer of digital video from your camcorder, i.LINK can help your camcorder act as a bridge between the analog and digital domains.

Conclusion

Excellent video quality and decent stills (if camcorder can take quality stills at all). Though TRV50 has more impressive set of features, TRV27 is cheaper.
